Aftershock After Midnight: Getting Home to Davis
The 11pm-to-1am problem: what still runs when the last set ends at Discovery Park, what doesn't, and how to sort the ride to Davis first.

Getting to Aftershock is a solved problem. The companion guide lays out every honest way there from Davis, and if you have not read it, start there.
This is the other half — the half everyone plans last. It is 11:40pm, the last set has finished, you are standing in a park where the American River meets the Sacramento River, your phone is at six percent, and Davis is on the far side of the Causeway.
What is still running when the music stops
Three things. All three are decisions you had to make before you left the house.
The Cal Expo shuttle. Aftershock's Park & Ride shuttle keeps running about 75 minutes after the festival ends each night (Getting Here). That is the most dependable way off the site late — but only if you already hold a shuttle pass and your car is already sitting at Cal Expo. It is not a thing you can decide at 11:45.
The SacRT supplemental bus. The supplemental service from downtown runs a return at the end of the event, from the same Jibboom Street spot where it dropped you off (Getting Here). That gets you to downtown Sacramento. Downtown Sacramento is not Davis — see below.
The bike valet. It is watched for the whole event, so the bike is still there when you come out (Getting Here). That solves the Sacramento end of a trip. Nobody is riding the Causeway home at midnight.
Your exit gate is decided by how you are getting home
Discovery Park has two ways out and they are not interchangeable. Park & Ride passholders enter and exit at the Garden Highway gate on the north side. The pick-up zone and the SacRT bus are on the Jibboom Street side to the south — across the bridge, then along the bike path under the I-5 overpass, up on the right near 500 Bercut Dr (Getting Here). The festival's own advice is to leave by the correct side at the end of the night. Take it literally: the wrong gate in the dark is a long walk back around the park.
If you drove yourself
Two facts about the paid lots matter more on the way out than on the way in: they are roughly a twenty-minute walk from the park, and overnight parking is prohibited — the festival does not manage those lots (Getting Here). So "leave the car, get a ride back, collect it tomorrow" is not something you can improvise at 1am.
If you use the accessible lot, know this: vehicles there are held in place until pedestrian traffic clears, which the festival says can be as long as 45 minutes after the end of the show (Getting Here). Tell whoever is waiting for you.
The gap: transit runs, just not that late
Sacramento to Davis is an easy trip in daylight. The Capitol Corridor runs it, and Yolobus Route 42A is the clockwise half of the intercity loop — the direction that runs downtown Sacramento, West Sacramento, Davis. (42B is the same loop the other way round.)
Here is the honest part. The last scheduled departure from Sacramento back to Davis falls earlier in the evening than a headliner finishes. We are deliberately not printing a time: timetables change, and a stale time in a guide like this is worse than none. Look your night up on the operator's own page, write it down somewhere that is not your phone battery, and hold it against the set you came for. If the set ends after the last departure, you need a car in the plan — and you needed it before you left Davis.
That is not a knock on the train or the bus. Both are genuinely good at this trip. It is a knock on the hours, and it is the same gap that makes every late event in Yolo County awkward.
Going back with someone who was already going
Cars leave Discovery Park for Davis on all four nights. Most cars on any road have empty seats in them.
That is the whole idea behind TAGO. It is a carpool for students: you sign in with
your .edu email, you say where you are going and when, and you see who else is going the
same way. Priya driving back to Davis after the last set — an example, not a real listing —
is not running a service. She is sharing the cost of a trip she was making anyway.
The part that matters at midnight: for events and places, the return leg is planned with the trip out. It is part of the same plan, not a scramble afterwards, so you commit to the way there already knowing which car is going back. What you chip in is capped at the IRS standard mileage rate for the day of the trip — here is how that split works.
Nobody can promise you a car will be there. Whether one exists depends entirely on who is going, which is exactly why the useful move is posting your trip in September rather than at 11:40pm in a field with no signal. The Aftershock page on TAGO shows how many people are going; routes and names stay private until you sign in with your .edu.
The midnight checklist
- Sort the way home on the same day you sort the way there. Not later.
- Look up the last departure to Davis for your specific night, and write it down.
- If the last set finishes after it, you need a seat in a car — arrange it weeks out.
- Know your exit gate: Garden Highway for the shuttle, Jibboom Street for the pick-up zone and the SacRT bus.
- Agree the exact meeting spot, out loud, before you walk in.
- Charge your phone, then make a plan that survives it dying.
