Danny Gonzalez in San Jose: getting there from Davis
Fri Feb 5 at San Jose Improv. The train gets you down, but the last one home leaves before showtime. The 21+ rule, parking, and a car going.

Danny Gonzalez & Friends plays San Jose Improv, at 62 South 2nd Street, on Friday, February 5, with shows at 7:30pm and 9:45pm. Two more follow on Saturday, February 6, at 7:00pm and 9:30pm (San Jose Improv). Check the show page for which nights still have seats.
It's a comedy club, not an arena. Read the house rules before you plan the drive.
Check the age line first
The Improv's FAQ says that unless a show says otherwise, you must be at least 21 to enter, with valid photo ID (Info & FAQ). Plenty of us aren't 21 yet. Look for an age note on your ticket before you buy, not at the door.
The rest, from the same FAQ and the show page:
- A two-item minimum. Any food or drink counts, with or without alcohol.
- No oversized bags or backpacks.
- Seating stops 15 minutes after the show starts. "No exceptions, no refunds."
- Your ID has to match the name on the ticket. Third-party tickets aren't honored.
The seating rule shapes the whole trip. Twenty minutes late on a long drive means no show.
The train down: good, and one way
The Capitol Corridor runs from Davis straight to San Jose Diridon, no change. February 5 isn't on its holiday list, so the weekday table applies. On the Weekday Westbound table in force today, effective December 8, 2025:
- The 2:39pm from Davis reaches San Jose at 5:35pm. That's your train for the 7:30 show.
- The 5:17pm reaches San Jose at 8:14pm. Fine for the 9:45 show, too late for 7:30.
Coming from Sacramento? The same two trains leave there 16 minutes earlier, at 2:23pm and 5:01pm. Either way it's just under three hours to San Jose.
Diridon is at 65 Cahill Street. Capitol Corridor's station page lists Plaza de Cesar Chavez, downtown, as about 10 minutes and 0.8 miles by light rail. It also says VTA accepts Capitol Corridor transit transfers (San Jose-Diridon). Check a map for the last few blocks to South 2nd.
Now the way back. On the Weekday Eastbound table, the last train out of San Jose leaves at 6:55pm and reaches Davis at 9:42pm. That's before either Friday show starts. Saturday's weekend table runs later, with a last train at 8:05pm reaching Davis at 10:48pm. That's barely an hour after the 7:00 show starts.
Nothing wrong with the train. Its hours just end before a late show. So it works if you're staying over in the Bay Area, or if someone is driving you back. The first weekend train home on Saturday morning leaves San Jose at 8:50am and reaches Davis at 11:36am.
One dated notice. Caltrain is doing concrete and flooring work at Diridon from October 19 through December 2026. It may affect access to platforms, ramps and stairs, with delays of up to five minutes (Capitol Corridor). It's scheduled to end before February, and timetables can change by then too, so check again the week of the show. You'll need a government-issued photo ID to board.
Driving down
It's a Friday-evening drive across the Bay Area. We found no public source we trust for Friday drive time, so we won't guess. Leave early.
On parking, the Improv says there's street parking and several lots nearby, and it doesn't validate (Info & FAQ). If you'd rather park once, the Diridon station page lists a Caltrain lot and a public lot off S. Montgomery and W. San Fernando at $5 all day, and notes that rates can change.
Alone, both ways, that's a lot of road for one show. Split four ways, it's a Friday night.
If you're driving down anyway
If you're heading to San Jose that weekend with empty seats, two in the car puts you in the carpool lane. Riders chip in for a trip you were making anyway, and their share is capped at the IRS rate. Nobody is sent across town: riders can be dropped at a transit stop already on your route, and you set the pickup point. Afterwards you rate your riders on how they treated your car and the ride, and they rate you back.
Going with people who are already going
That's what TAGO is for: a carpool for students. Sign in with your .edu email, say
where you're going, and see who else is going the same way. No fleet, no dispatcher.
The way back is planned with the way out. For events and places, the return leg is part of the same plan. When the last train leaves before the show starts, that's the part that matters.
Your share has a ceiling. What a rider contributes can never exceed the IRS standard mileage rate for the day of the trip. Past the first eight miles the per-mile rate eases down, so a long trip costs less per mile than a short one. How ride costs split walks through it.
Nobody can tell you a car will be there. It depends on who's going, which is why posting early beats searching late. The Danny Gonzalez & Friends page on TAGO shows what has been posted. Routes and names stay private until you sign in with your .edu.
Before February 5
- Check the age line on the ticket. It's 21+ unless the show says otherwise.
- Pick a show you can reach before seating closes. By train, that's the 2:39pm for 7:30, or the 5:17pm for 9:45.
- Decide how you're getting home before you buy. No train runs back to Davis after either show.
- Leave the backpack at home.
- Re-check the Capitol Corridor table the week of the show.
