Kings home opener from Davis: tip 7:00, train 9:03
Opening Night is Friday Oct 23, tip 7:00pm at Golden 1 Center. The last weekday train to Davis leaves at 9:03. Plan the way back before you buy.

The Kings open at home on Friday, October 23, against the Portland Trail Blazers. The team's own schedule marks it Opening Night and lists a 7:00pm tip (Sacramento Kings). Golden 1 Center puts doors at 5:30pm, at 500 David J Stern Walk in downtown Sacramento (Golden 1 Center).
From Davis, getting there is the easy half. Getting back is the half you have to decide now, and not at the final buzzer.
Plan backwards from 9:03
A basketball clock stops, so nobody publishes when a game ends. The venue's listing carries an 11:59pm end stamp — the outside edge of the night, not a finish time (Golden 1 Center). Overtime is on no timetable at all.
The last train is. On the schedule in force today, the final weekday westbound Capitol Corridor leaves Sacramento at 9:03pm and reaches Davis at 9:19pm (Capitol Corridor).
Tip is 7:00pm. Hold those two numbers next to each other before you buy anything.
The train is the quickest way in, and the first to go
Sacramento Valley Station is at 401 I Street at 5th, and the ride is sixteen minutes (Capitol Corridor). The arena is an easy six-minute, 0.3-mile walk from the station (Capitol Corridor).
So the train is an excellent way to reach a game and a weak way to leave one. That is no knock on the train — sixteen minutes to Davis is one of the genuinely good things about living here. It is a knock on the hours.
After 9:03 there is one bus
Yolobus's intercity loop runs Davis to downtown Sacramento and back, seven days a week. Route 42B carries you out; Route 42A is the clockwise half that brings you home. As published today, the last weekday 42A leaves the stop called L & 5th (Golden 1 Center) at 10:57pm and reaches the UC Davis Memorial Union at 11:50pm (Route 42A).
Sort one thing out before you lean on it. SacRT publishes a list of downtown bus stops that close during Golden 1 Center events, and L Street at 5th Street is on it — riders are told to board at L Street at 9th instead (SacRT). That is the same corner the 42A timetable names. Find out where your bus is really boarding while it is still light out.
Driving down: the pass has a clock on it
Golden 1 Center runs no lots of its own. It points you at pre-paid passes through the City of Sacramento's SacPark site; the garages tied to the arena open two hours before tipoff (Golden 1 Center).
One line matters more after a long night: a pre-purchased pass is good until two hours after the event. Spaces are first-come, first-served, a specific garage "is subject to availability and is not guaranteed", and there is no shuttle from the downtown garages — you walk in and out via 5th & J, 7th & K or 5th & L.
Every other home game this season
Opening Night is one of many. On the published schedule, home games tip at 7:00pm on most weeknights and Saturdays, while Sunday tips move around — 3:00pm, 6:00pm and 7:30pm all appear (Sacramento Kings). Against the same 9:03 train, a 3:00pm Sunday and a 7:00pm Friday are not the same night at all.
Three things to check before each game:
- The tip time, on the team's schedule. Everything else hangs on it.
- Which timetable applies. Capitol Corridor publishes separate weekday and weekend tables, and the weekend westbound runs out earlier still — last Sacramento departure 8:53pm, into Davis at 9:09pm (Capitol Corridor).
- That game's venue listing, for doors and anything set per event.
Or go with someone who is already going
Cars drive Davis to downtown Sacramento on game nights and drive back afterwards, most with empty seats both ways.
That is what TAGO is for: a carpool for students. Sign in with your .edu email, say
where you are going, and see who else is going the same way. No fleet and no dispatcher —
students with a car and students without one, sharing the cost of a trip that was
happening anyway.
Two things that matter when the last train goes at 9:03:
The way back is planned with the way out. For events and places the return leg is part of the same plan, settled in the afternoon rather than out on David J Stern Walk with everyone else leaving at once.
Your share has a ceiling. What a rider contributes can never exceed the IRS standard mileage rate for the day of the trip — a legal cap on cost-sharing, enforced in the code behind every trip rather than promised in an ad. Past the first eight miles the per-mile rate eases down. How ride costs split walks through it.
Nobody can tell you a car will be there. Whether one exists depends on who is going that night, which is why posting early beats searching late. The Kings home opener on TAGO page shows how many people are going; routes and names stay private until you sign in with your .edu.
Before you buy the ticket
- Write down two times: 9:03pm, the last weekday train out of Sacramento, and 10:57pm, the last weekday 42A out of L & 5th.
- Hold them against a 7:00pm tip. Decide which you are actually going to make, and what you do if the game runs long.
- Sort the way back on the day you sort the way there.
- Driving? Buy the SacPark pass ahead. It stops being valid two hours after the event.
- Bags: clutches and wallets smaller than 8" x 6" x 1", subject to inspection; medical and parental bags go through the X-ray (Golden 1 Center).
- Agree a meeting point before you go in. Everyone leaves by the same three walkways.
